My name is Trey McDonald, and I am the Republican candidate for Buncombe County Sheriff.
As life-long residents of Buncombe County, my wife and I are proud to call WNC our home. This is where we have raised our family and where I have had the privilege of serving this community for more than twenty years at the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.
I am a veteran of the United States Army. It has been my mission to serve not only my community but also my country.
After my service in the military, I began my career in 1999 as a Deputy with the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office where I was initially assigned to the Detention Center. I was later transferred to the Patrol Division where I worked as a Patrol Deputy, served as a Field Training Officer, and was promoted to Patrol Sergeant. I also worked as a Detective in the Criminal Investigations Division, most specifically with the Major Case and Property Crimes units. Additionally, I served as a Sergeant on the Sheriff's Community Enforcement Team (SCET). Over the years, in conjunction with my primary responsibilities, I was a member of the Special Response Team (SRT) where I operated in the capacities of Team Leader and Assistant Team Commander.
Today, I continue to serve the community as an employee of the Asheville Regional Airport Department of Public Safety.
I know firsthand the complexities of working within the Sheriff’s Office. I also clearly recognize the importance of the role the Sheriff’s Office plays in the overall safety and well-being of our community.
Over the past 4 years, I have watched the opioid pandemic and violent crime rates surge in Buncombe County, now making the city of Asheville one of the top ten in America for violent crimes. It is now more than ever, Buncombe County needs a Sheriff that is committed to partnering with the community and bringing down the crime rate. A Sheriff that is committed to public safety and improving the quality of life when it comes to those issues, for the people of Buncombe County.
One of my many concerns is the deteriorating state of the Sheriff’s Office, particularly the Detention Center and inmate deaths. As Sheriff, I will find the answers to what is happening inside the detention center and why we have the top rated most unsafe jail in NC. I will work to find solutions to repair these problems and restore the safety of our deputies and inmates as well as the overall morale of the entire Sheriff’s Office.
I will work tirelessly to regain the trust of our community.
Thank you for taking the time to visit my page and learn more about me. I am eager to visit the communities of Buncombe County and meet with the residents. I want to hear your individual concerns and learn how I can be of better service to you and your community. I am committed to earning your confidence, and your vote
Warmest Regards,
Trey McDonald
Candidate for Buncombe County Sheriff
